We try our best to use the best materials and cleverness when we design our bags. Here is just a sampling of some of our thinking.
Exterior Fabrics
Produced with 1680 denier ballistic nylon (yes, the same type of material used to make bulletproof vests) with water resistant backing. The KhakiStone however is 1050 denier Cordura which is just as durable except has a matte finish.
Interior Fabrics
The main liner is made of nylon with vinyl backing. The lining is water resistant but not waterproof as we would need to glue the seams or use GoreTex to make it completely waterproof. The interior is orange not only because we think it looks cool but also to help you see what you put inside your bag. The smaller compartments are produced with nylon with water resistant backing.
Laptop Protection
We realize the importance of protecting one's investment...that's why we decided to use a high impact plastic on the backside of the bag along with 10mm high density foam on the front, back and bottom of the laptop compartment. We also created laptop stabilizers for those who want a snug fit for their laptops. Did you think velour was only good for jumpsuits? It's also great to protect your laptop from scratches so we lined the laptop compartment with it.
Lumbar "Bum" Pads
All BBP Hybrid bags have lumbar pads placed where you need it the most. The pads are designed with foam and mesh with an air flow channel between the left and right pads to keep you cool.
Zippers
We use high tech water resistant zippers for the laptop compartment and flat seam zippers throughout the rest of the bag. We also added some handy zipper pulls to make opening and closing that much easier.
Buckles, Rings, and Clips
We use mostly hardware made of metal or Acetal (aka Delrin as Dupont calls it). Metal is tough as literally nails while Acetal, also known as Polyacetal, Polyoxymethylene (POM) or Polyformaldehyde is a high performance engineering polymer that was developed to be a synthetic replacement for metal. In other words, some super tough plastic! We also picked oversized buckles not only because they look good because they are so darn easy to use.
Stitching, Bar Tacking and Seam Tape
We top stitch throughout and bar tack over 20 stress points. We also use the highest quality seam tape to keep the bag together. All of the fabric joins are covered and never exposed.
No Velcro
Generally we think it's evil because if you've ever owned a messenger bag, it's damn noisy when you open the main flap, it snags sweaters, and it sticks to your carpet when you drop your bag on the floor. On top of that, it also tends to be the first thing that wears out and gets jammed with lint. So we made a stand against the spread of velcro. We use it very very limitedly for applications that don't get changed often like the snug fit laptop adjuster. It's just a necessary evil sometimes. However, we do like velcro on those retro sneakers.
